New Netflix Series ‘Self Made’ About the First Black Millionaire, Madam C.J. Walker

Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker premiered on Friday, March 20 on Netflix and I am sure that everyone spent their weekend like myself curled up on a couch to tune into series during this pandemic.

'Self Made' explored the early life of Sarah Breedlove, the woman who set the standard for black female entrepreneurship in the haircare industry in America, who we all know as Madam C.J Walker.

Walker was suffering major hair loss and low self-esteem due to stress and an unhappy relationship and after a door to door sales visit by Addie Monroe, Walker's life changed forever. She was awe of what Monroe's product did for her that she wanted to help spread product as a door to door sales agent for Monroe. However, Monroe didn't see fit that Walker fit the description of someone who could sell her product.

Walker reformulated Monroe's haircare recipe for hair growth in African American Women and her skills as a storyteller and saleswoman not only helped women and men in her community financially but it changed narrative for her and her family.

Entrepreneurs all over could learn some things through the 4 part series. Walker encouraged viewers to always know your numbers, your competition, know what it takes to launch and grow a successful business, have a plan and implement it and most importantly dream big.

Her career and her desire to help women and uplift women and to start a business like men, was very progressive during the 1900's. Her desire led to the dream of the Walker Manufacturing Co. The company employed thousands of black women as door-to-door sales agents, gave many others professionals careers, and provided opportunities for generation wealth.

In the four-part limited series, Octavia Spencer stars as Madam C.J. Walker, Blair Underwood as her husband C.J. Walker, Tiffany Haddish as her daughter Lelia, Carmen Ejogo as Walker’s business rival Addie Monroe, Garrett Morris as Walker’s father-in-law, Kevin Carroll as her longtime lawyer Ransom and a feature from Bill Bellamy as Ransom’s cousin Sweetness.

Walker died in 1919, with a net worth of $600,000 to $700,000 that is equivalent to $8.9 million to $10.7 million today, according to Smithsonian Magazine.
